How did you get into BMX? There was a guy when I worked as a mechanic that always came by the shop asking to borrow my tools for his bike. One day he had a hip-hop shirt of a local artist that I also was into, got to talking about music and started making music with him. One day I asked about his bike, and wondered if I could give it a try, I fell in love with it and the rest is history!
What languages do you speak? English, I wish I was fluent in more, but only know small phrases and words from several others.
What are your top three parks? There are so many parks I love but have only been to a handful of times and wish I lived closer to!
- Chino skatepark
- Arvada skatepark
- I know it’s not a park but street riding in Albuquerque is worth some recognition!
Top three songs to get you pumped? Depends on the day but …
- Siouxsie and The Banshees – Peek-a-boo
- PVRIS – My House
- The Veronicas – Untouched
Three people who inspire you and why. So many people are so inspiring on so many levels.
- Nina Buitrago just because growing up and watching how she looks at life has been such a wonderful blessing, being similar in age she keeps me optimistic!
- Honestly you, Bea and Angie for all the things you are pushing forward with for women’s BMX, you guys are killing it and creating such wonderful avenues and opportunities for future riders!
- Lastly Troy Mcmurray and family! Sammy J is killing it mom style, and being able to watch the girls grow up with such support I’m proud to be auntie Jess and watch them grow up!
What is a trend in BMX you want to stop seeing? Tough question. I think the idea of division of style. The idea of being caught up as just a street, dirt or park rider. I wouldn’t say it’s the biggest trend and ultimately I’m guilty of it at times myself.
How do you spend your days off your bike? Working for the ASPCA, I have a business helping and training shelter and rescue dogs transition to their forever homes that’s going very well! Helping a rescue with spay and neuter clinics in tribal lands. I’m always up to something animal welfare related.
Favourite person to ride or train with? Tough question! My buddy Habo is who I’m always with and Drew Jackson is a great source of motivation and always a great time!
Favourite shoes to ride in? Vans High Tops always hit the spot
Most inspirational quote? Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re probably right.
Best advice given to you? Never take advice from someone that isn’t living the life you would want for yourself.
Your biggest fear? Failure, and honestly missing out on stuff
Your proudest accomplishment? Being able to watch BMX grow for women from the very beginning. Being able to travel and create lasting friendships.
Three guilty pleasures?
- I’m gonna say Taylor swift even though I don’t feel too guilty
- Excessive crime TV
- Cheese intake
Your worst habit? Oversharing
If you could hire someone to help you in some sort of aspect of your life, what would it be? Meal prep and personal training (someone to yell at me about eating cheese)
What is an amazing experience you had that couldn’t have happened without BMX? Being able to see the world and stay with friends I met through riding, then being able to go to their country and enjoy it like a local.
Your top three future goals you want to achieve? I would love to get back to riding more consistently and my body to get strong again, create a work/life balance that caters to that. I want to get some of my old tricks back that for some reason scare me now. They go hand in hand so they’re all so possible!
