Mariana Pajon on Colombian Protests

Last night, Colombian BMX Racer Mariana Pajon, two-time Olympic gold medalist, and BMX World Champion, made a statement in regards to the violence that occurred Monday night against protesters in the Colombian city of Cali. Pajon, who collectively has over 4 million followers between Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, spoke against the events where police opened fire on demonstrators that allegedly killed and injured several people. She writes on Facebook:

“Para nadie es un secreto que en Colombia hay muchas cosas que arreglar, pero la violencia NUNCA será el camino. Yo también estoy cansada de muchas cosas: La corrupción, la inequidad, la lejanía en la que ha estado nuestra clase política de las necesidades del pueblo, la falta de oportunidades, etc. nos han desangrado hace muchos años y tienen que acabar YA, pero matándonos unos a otros no vamos a llegar a ningún lado. No todos pensamos igual, no todos tenemos las mismas necesidades, dificultades y nunca podemos perder la empatía. Protestar cuando estamos en desacuerdo es una de las capacidades que nos diferencia a los seres humanos de las demás especies, pero otra de las diferencias que hoy tenemos que demostrar es nuestra capacidad de hacernos escuchar de forma civilizada, calmada y no de forma violenta. Igualmente en una sociedad, la respuesta de las autoridades tiene que estar enmarcada el el límite de los derechos y los protocolos porque nadie por más poder o autoridad que tenga puede pasar por encima de otras personas y nadie es dueño de la vida o la integridad de nadie. Escuchar a quienes claman algo no los va a ser sentir inferiores, al contrario demostrará la grandeza de quienes lideran nuestra sociedad en todos los campos. Yo amo a mi país y así como me he sentido orgullosa de llevar los colores de mi bandera y cantar mi himno por el mundo, hoy me duele mucho lo que pasa en Colombia, me duele ver que estamos enfrentados unos y otros, me duele ver abusos, muerte y destrucción, me duele ver incluso la violencia trasladada a redes sociales con personas que como yo no hacemos otra cosa que querer y representar a nuestro país de la mejor manera por el mundo. Por favor paremos ya estos enfrentamientos sin sentido y sentémonos a conversar como sociedad.

A los jóvenes que están en la calle protestando pacíficamente: ¡Gracias por luchar por nuestros derechos, mi respeto y admiración!. A nuestras autoridades: Así como muchas veces les he agradecido por cuidarnos, hoy les pido mesura y cordura: Por favor no abusen de su autoridad, no queremos más sangre en las calles.”

In translation it reads:

For no one it’s a secret that Colombia has many things to fix, but violence will NEVER be the way. I too am tired of many things: corruption, inequity, remoteness in which our political class of people’s needs has been, lack of opportunities, etc. we have been bled out many years ago and they have to end NOW but killing each other we are not getting anywhere. Not everyone thinks alike, not everyone has the same needs, difficulties and can never lose empathy. Protesting when we disagree is one of the capabilities that differs humans from other species, but another of the differences we need to demonstrate today is our ability to make ourselves listen civilized, calm and not violent. Likewise in a society, the response of the authorities has to be framed the limit of rights and protocols because no one for more power or authority you have can pass over other people and no one owns the life or integrity of no one. Listening to those who cry out something will not be lower, on the contrary will demonstrate the greatness of those who lead our society in all fields. I love my country and just as I have been proud to wear the colors of my flag and sing my anthem for the world, today it hurts me a lot what happens in Colombia, it hurts to see that we are faced with each other, it hurts to watch abuse, death and destruction, it hurts me to see even violence moved to social media with people like me we do nothing but want and represent our country in the best way for the world. Please stop these senseless clashes and sit down and talk as a society.

To the young people who are on the street protesting peacefully: Thank you for fighting for our rights, my respect and admiration! To our authorities: Just as many times I have thanked you for taking care of us, today I ask you for restraint and sanity: Please do not abuse of his authority, we don’t want more blood in the streets.
