The Bloom BMX Photo Contest – 2024 Winners

In late September, we launched the first-ever BMX photo contest for women photographers, and today we’re announcing the winners! I’m happy to say that this was a very successful photo contest, especially for its first year. I got to see riders reach out to photographers and photographers call out for riders; seeing women coming together for this one goal was exactly what I had hoped for!

This year, we had four judges; myself, Naoki Gaman, Maddy Mario and the entire Sony Alpha Female team. Each judge was asked to pick their three top photos, and indicate which of the three was their first choice. Based on the majority vote and being the preferred choice for some of our judges, we now have a winner…

Congratulations Bianka Lathan!

We are excited to announce Bianka Lathan as our 2024 Bloom BMX Photo Contest winner! Collectively, the judges loved the creativity, energy and demonstration of skills with the use of slow shutter and panning. Bianka will be receiving a $300 microgrant from Sony Alpha Female, a feature in our 2025 calendar, a pack of Jones Soda, accessories from Peak Design and apparel from Vans BMX. Congrats Bianka!

“Well, I guess the 🐱 is out of the 💼… We’ve been busy cooking up something creative to submit to @thebloombmx’s first ever photo contest for women photographers.”

Our podium would be incomplete without two more winners, so we would like to give a huge congratulations to photographers Jessi Foster and Hannah Steinstra. Both photographers will each receive a $100 microgrant.

“This contest was a great excuse to hop in a car with a friend, hit up different spots to shoot/ride and giggle all day long. The older you get the harder it is to come by. Thanks for reminding me to slow down sometimes.” Jessi Foster

There were so many reasons to love this photo. It was clear to me that Jessi Foster and Brittany Campbell sought each other out just to take this project. It’s bright, clean, fun and embodies women working together. “I wanted to bring some southern charm to the BMX scene. Showcasing our TX/AR roots with southern brands @empirebmx @magnoliaLouisiana.” – Brittany

Last but not at all least, Hannah Steinstra‘s photo was a collective favourite amongst the judges. The use of flash to illuminate the subject was both stunning and striking. Beautifully done Hannah!

“Saw Jikke riding at the Dutch Championship Dirt this year but didn’t take her picture there, unfortunately. Then @thebloombmx announced their photo contest for women and I hoped to see Jikke again before the deadline. Luckily she came to a jam all the way up north a few weeks later, but I didn’t take my gear. Her mom lent me her car so I could go home to grab my stuff so I could finally take some pictures of this 14 year old Dutch talent!”

Thank you to everyone who entered and a big thank you to our sponsors Sony Alpha Female, Jones Soda, Peak Design and Vans.

We look forward to doing this every year, but if you’re looking for another reason to shoot, check out the Sony Alpha Female Facebook Group, where they do weekly contests with $500 microgrants – we might be doing another photo contest soon on there too (we are).
