I run my own Instagram account @kelly.rowsell and have recently started the Instagram account @ytg.bmx (freestyle girls) covering/supporting Australian Female BMX freestyle riders.
This is a platform where I share the girls’ content and create my own content riding and filming with the girls. I got into riding at 32 years old because my son rode and I got sick of sitting around skate parks for hours on end! I’ve been riding for 2 years now and even though I’m 34, I have no plans of stopping anytime soon
Event Recap
After winning 1st place in the amateur division at Oceania’s championships back in March, Kayla McCormick was chosen for an Ign!te scholarship by the 2x Queen of Crankworx, 8x BMX and MTB world champion, and 2x Olympian, Caroline Buchanan. She will receive support including mentoring from Caroline, financial support as well as coaching. She also has been hooked up with a fresh stack of gloves by one of the biggest handwear companies, FIST. Kayla recently rode in her first performance show with JC Action Sports at the Brisbane Cycling Festival and it is safe to say she killed it and we will be seeing a lot more from her in the near future!
Upcoming Events
The long-awaited Pizzey skatepark’s new addition of the pump track is having it’s grand opening on Friday 3rd May located in Miami, Queensland. Riders of all ages and skill levels are super excited about the world-class facility opening so just a friendly reminder to stay safe, be respectful of others, and most importantly have fun!
We’ve all been a beginner before so let’s be welcoming and compassionate to this next generation of shredders the pump track will inspire! Women’s lessons are also back due to popular demand, commencing Thursday the 2nd of May at Level Up Skatepark. They will be on from 4pm-5pm every Thursday until the 4th of July with JK Coaching for $30 a lesson.
SCX – Multisports is holding their yearly competition in Alexandra Heads skatepark on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday the 4th of May. Open to all levels of riders and will be an all-round great weekend.
Rider Spotlight
Anais Prince is back on the bike! Last year she sustained an ACL rupture and a meniscus tear which required reconstructive surgery and put her off the bike for a year. She has worked closely with a physio over her recovery to do the rehab to get her back on the bike and avoid further injuries in the future. While she is still a few months away from the knee being 100%, we are stoked to see her back riding!
Reminders
I am in the midst of planning a freestyle girls’ ride day in Southeast Queensland. The approximate day will be around the end of June/start of July so keep an eye out on the @ytg.bmx Instagram page for more details.
Lara Lessman has graced Aussie soil with her presence on two different occasions in the last couple of months. Everyone has had an awesome time riding with her at some of our local spots. She always has time for the little fans to chat and take photos and is an all-round beautiful person. We hope to see her back here again soon.
Last but not least… Gold Coast local, but previously from Canberra, Mylee Toohey, is headed to France ahead of FISE – Montpellier. We wish her all the best and look forward to watching her compete. Good luck to all the female riders competing at this event. It’s an exciting year of competition ahead with the Paris Olympics nearing! Don’t forget to check out our Instagram @ytg.bmx to see what all the Aussie BMX girls are up to! YEAH THE GIRLS!
