Hiya, my name is Kayley Ashworth, I’ve been a keen BMX Freestyle Rider for over a decade. A lot has changed in that time, back in 2014 I was unable to enter a competition because and I quote “you are a girl and there is no one else to compete with” – it was at this point that I rebelled run’d into the course (as they introduced Mark Webb – so huge shoutout to that guy for letting me take his spot) it was at this point I landed a backflip and the event agreed that in 2015 we would see the first female BMX class in the UK – yay! I understand both the highs and the lows of this sport. I have battled numerous injuries to have a presence/voice/impact on BMX Freestyle. I am a firm believer that all individuals should have safe access to sport and I’m delighted to have the opportunity to inform you all of the happenings here in the UK. I am bold, passionate and I apologize in advance if I offend, it comes from a good place (but that’s just my opinion haha).
Event Recap
Recently, Asylum skatepark re-opened their doors after a setup revamp. The addition of a step-up is an exciting addition for the ladies here. In mid-wales, Welsh Cycling are currently running a community pump track series to encourage beginner riders to explore their local tracks. I attended round 1 on 6th April at Builth Wells Pump Track to show the art of ‘pump’ and work on reducing their lap time – prizes consisted of Easter eggs and medals. Every rider was celebrated when crossing the line and this brought a wonderful warmth to the event. Round 2 – 1st June, Rhayader, Round 3 – 22nd August, Gilbert. Ramp1 Skatepark has also reopened its doors after closing for a few months.

Reminders
Kind reminder that you will meet a lot of different people at skateparks and may find that you have more support than you realise. BUT, it is common in some areas for locals to have the mentality of “women should be in the kitchen” if this happens, be reassured that you are not the problem, their mentality is. It’s up to you if you want to challenge that ideal, but be assured there are other places in the country that are very welcoming to all riders. Also, feeling a little silly is normal and I encourage you to feel silly as often as possible, especially if you’re trying something for the first time.
I’d like to wish one of our newest riders a Happy Birthday, Sam Anderson came to this sport following an undefeated reign in MMA, recently celebrating her 40th birthday, she’s a true testament that you can pick up a BMX at any age – I hope to still be riding skateparks when I hit the big 4-0!
