It was like any other fall day, brisk in the morning, warm in the afternoon, and colourful leaves floating through the air; but the setting was a little different as we found ourselves at the 2022 USABMX Freestyle Championships at Woodward Camp.
The future of women’s BMX in the United States is looking bright with more and more young girls getting into competition. Thanks to the efforts of Shane Fernandez and Tony Degollado from USABMX Freestyle, these competitions are providing a pathway for the young hopefuls who might be dreaming of Olympic glory.
11-year-old veteran Lily Voss secured her champion and overall title this year, along with Keir Sirlin in her respective category (12 and up). A notable mention definitely has to go to Mia Custer, she’s accelerated so much in just the last few months and is definitely one to watch in the years to come. Bethany Hedrick also dropped into her last amateur level competition and debuted in her first Elite level contest on the same weekend – a great segway as she prepares to leave the country for the first time next month for Worlds in Abu Dhabi.
